When it drops

A dead link is rarely a dead market

Outages are real and they happen, but the first five minutes of "the market is down" are almost never about the market. Work the list in order, and most of the time you will have found the problem at step one or two.

The checklist, in order

  1. Wait out the circuit. Thirty seconds, hands off. A cold circuit takes a while and the page will not tell you it is working. Refreshing restarts the build you were in the middle of.

  2. Rebuild, then switch. If it is still dark, force a new circuit (Ctrl+Shift+R in Tor Browser). Then open a second address from the strip at the top of this page. One mirror not answering is not the market not answering; the three are equal doors into the same building.

  3. Check your own side. Open any .onion you know, or the Tor Project's own check page, in the same browser. If nothing on Tor is loading, the problem is your network or your Tor, and no amount of mirror-switching will fix it. Bridges, in the setup page, are the usual next step.

  4. Look where the market actually talks. The announcement area inside the market, the forums, the signed notes. A real outage is announced where users already are, not in a search ad and not in a Telegram message from an account created this morning.

  5. Give it time, keep the money where it is. Markets come back. Your funds sit in escrow on the market's side, not on the front page, and a front page being quiet does not move them.

The one time "down" means "moved"

There is one scenario where all three addresses stop working at once and the market is fine: a rotation. The operators publish new strings and retire the old set, usually after sustained attack on the current one.

You can tell a rotation from an outage by the announcement. A rotation comes with new addresses, from the market's own channels, and the old ones stop resolving around the same time. An outage comes without new addresses, and the old ones come back. Until you have seen the announcement, a "new address" floating in a chat is a claim, not a fact. Why no badge can answer it for you

An uptime figure or a green dot beside an onion describes one machine on its own circuits at a moment that has already passed. Your client picks its own relays and rebuilds the path every time, so a mirror that refused that machine will often answer you straight away, and the reverse happens just as often. A number that looks like certainty and is not is worse than no number at all.
